Showtime series "Homeland" - Event photographer

So occasionally I (Jay Evans) work on a feature film or tv show as a background actor. I usually get to do 1-2 a year depending on what comes through the area and what is going on. It is fun to see behind the scenes and the effort and detail that goes into the things we watch on a regular basis. One doesn't make a lot of money doing background work and the hours are brutally long, nor do you get a lot of respect on the set from anyone. However, you get an amazing story you can tell your friends at parties and occasionally you actually get to see yourself on the big screen.

Anyway, earlier this year I had to opportunity to be cast as a photographer (rather fitting) on a pilot for a series that Showtime was putting together called "Homeland". The series will star Clarie Danes and Damian Lewis (Capt Winters - Band of Brothers). It was soooo cold on the set the days we worked. We just about froze out there. I was so cold that my camera was shaking from me shivering during the takes. Anyway, they are slowly releasing teasers and trailers from Showtime to build up anticipation for the show. Personally, I think the show is going to be a success, and not just because I am in it. Anyway, they just released a new teaser http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bSTN7ClsewQ the other day and at 41 sec in I noticed someone who looked familiar. Here are some stills from that time frame. That is me and my Nikon camera taking photographs during a scene on the set. I wish I could share the resultant photograph that corresponds to this moment but it was requested that I not release those photographs until the episode has aired. But I can share these video stills of Picasso Perfect Photography's Jay Evans on the set of "Homeland". I thought they came out kind of cool!

My business partner Andrew is getting married soon! I am super excited for them to get married and start their life together. So we went out and did some engagement photos for them a few weeks ago. It was so cold out that day, but they endured through it all. Luckily, I had a hat on with a balaclava around my neck to keep me warm so I wasn't too bad. I took them down to a local river and made some images of them in and around the area. Even though it was cold, we had a fun time of playing around and making photographs. I bring you this blog today with both a happy and sad heart. First the happy and good news. Congratulations to the USC (that is University of South Carolina) Gamecock Football team for winning the SEC East Conference this weekend. It has been a long tough road but you stuck to it and pulled it out. As alumni of USC, it makes me proud of your accomplishment. You have represented our university well!! Stick with it the rest of the season and fight it out till the end. Don't get caught up in your own success... set another goal and go after it.

On a sad note, my heart and condolences go out to the friends and family of Chance Zobel the Columbia / Richland firefighter who gave his life doing his job to keep the residents of this great city safe. Also our prayers are with Larry Irvin for a quick and complete recovery from his injuries that he also received doing his job! To all firefighters everywhere, THANK YOU for what you do to keep us safe, we appreciate you!! You are all HERO'S in my book!!

Bob Fulton - Voice of the Gamecocks remembered

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Bob Fulton on his passing. He for some many years was the Voice of the Gamecocks and touched so many lives with his description on Gamecock athletics for those that couldn't make the games. I personally met Bob after he had retired from doing Gamecocks games and he was calling high school football games for my Alma mater just for fun! He was to most upstanding, and honorable man, and one of the nicest people that you could meet. He will be missed and we thank him for his contributions to this community over the years! May he rest in peace....

Josh and Renee met at a cookout thrown by a mutual friend and from there on, the magic happened. They are such a wonderful couple and we wish them the very best in their marriage together.

I read this article this week and wanted to share it with my readers. It was written by Dr. Robert Rohm and really made me think. I hope you find it as thought provoking as I did. Tip: Really, what is important is what you hang on your walls!

Most all of us have pictures that we have hung on our walls. I have never been in someone's home or business without seeing pictures hanging in almost every room. What are all these pictures about and what do they mean?

Most of us acquire a lot of things over the span of our lives. We collect furniture, books, appliances, toys, and many other items that fill our homes and offices. The majority of these items is meant to serve a practical purpose to assist us in doing our work or bring us comfort. It is nice to have a comfy bed to lie in at night. It is great to have a good chair to sit in and relax. It is also good to have some furniture in which to store our "stuff." However, I think that even though all of these items are important, the real truth of what is in a person's heart is found in what hangs on their walls. Let me explain a little further.

Pictures of flowers and birds and trees are nice, but if you will notice, when people look at them they simply glance and maybe smile or nod, but do not pay a great deal of attention to them. However, when people look at pictures of your family, they often stop and study each face carefully. They may begin looking for you when you were younger or maybe at a picture of your family when you were on vacation or a trip. There is just something about seeing family photos that makes people start asking questions like, "Now, who is this person?" "When was this taken?" "Where were you when this event took place?" It causes people to want to know more about you as a person and more about your family as well.

We are definitely relational creatures! Almost all of us are aware that our past relationships and myriads of life-events have shaped us and made us who we are today. And, oftentimes, nothing reveals that better than our pictures.

Not too long ago I was in a school superintendent's office. I noticed that behind his desk he had pictures of Coach Bear Bryant of the University of Alabama. After our meeting I asked if it would be possible for me to step around his desk to look at some of those pictures more closely. He was more than willing to accommodate me. He showed me every picture and told me the story behind each one. He even had an autographed picture of Coach Bryant that he got while a student at the university. As I left his office that day, I was amused to realize that the superintendent was much more excited when talking to me about his pictures of Coach Bryant than he was about the things we discussed in our meeting that related to the school system of which he was in charge.

If I were to visit your home or office, what kind of pictures would I see? I have a sneaking suspicion that there would be many pictures of family and loved ones on your walls. As I asked you questions about these people, you would start telling me stories about things that have happened to you and to them, as well.

I know that many of us hang our college degrees on the wall, and that's okay because that tells part of our life's story, but nothing is more valuable than a picture of a child, a family member, or a loved one. At the end of the day, those relationships are what life is all about and pictures remind us of their importance.

Over the last few years almost everyone in my family has passed away. I have had to decide what to do with all of their belongings. Most of their "stuff" only meant something to them, but I have enjoyed seeing all of their pictures because they have told the story of their lives.

In the end, all of the pictures that we leave behind will show what was important to us - what we did with family and friends and what shaped our lives to be the person that we were.

Look on your walls this week. Maybe you need to add some pictures that would help others know you a little better. It is such a small thing to do, but reveals such a large part of life. Your walls are speaking today. Make sure they are telling your story!

Picasso Perfect Photography will be at the Carolina Bridal Showcase this Sunday July 18th, 2010 from 1-5pm at the Columbia Convention Center (1101 Lincoln St). Stop on by and say hello!

Here is our tip for all those brides to be out there that might go to this show or any other bridal show. Before you go, print some labels with your name, wedding date / time, email address, phone number, and if you have room, your address. This will save you tons of time and effort when you are talking to the vendors. It is going to be a long day, so why not save some time by placing a label on the vendor's information sheet rather than filling out everyone's individual form.

Good luck at the show and I hope you get a lot of information and ideas to make your wedding day perfect!!

This is our tribute to Fredric Tobias Morriss better known as Toby. He liked to refer to himself as a bricoleur but he was known as a professor, colleague, and friend. He was a professor of photography at the University of South Carolina (USC) in the Media Arts Department and a mechanic for motorcycles. More-so, he was known for his hugs and kind spirit. He will be missed by the people whose lives he touch. Though he is no longer with us, his influence will live on. The photography community in Columbia, SC will not be the same without him. These photos are not only a tribute and remembrance to Toby but are also symbolic of him and his influence.

Hello Extra Hands Members, Family and Friends!

As we approach Spring of the new year we have so much to look forward to...so much to be thankful for...so many memories to create with family and friends.

But for many children in our midst there isn't that much to look forward to. These are children who have been diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition. These are children who are dealing with incredible challenges and did nothing to create the hardships they are facing. These are children that need our help!!

Extra Hands has recently joined forces with the Make-A-Wish foundation and are truly passionate about these kids. We're hoping you'll share our passion by helping with this Adopt A Wish campaign to raise $5,000 by the end of March. This will grant ONE CHILD'S WISH...and we are prepared to do this one dollar at a time if needed. Please feel free to donate whatever amount you wish and can. There is no donation too small. Anything and everything is important, needed and appreciated. Remember, there is power in numbers and we can have that. If we can get 500 -1,000 people on board to donate 5–10 dollars we can still grant a wish. Think about it -That is one cup of coffee this month from your favorite coffee place in exchange for granting a child’s wish.

We understand these are tough economic times. Whether a recovery is in store soon is anyone's guess, but there will eventually be a recovery for sure. These children we are helping can't say the same thing about their recovery. While we wish for a better economy, these kids are wishing to see Mickey Mouse, have a new play set or meet their grandparents who live in another state.

The Extra Hands Adopt A Wish child is a precious 6 year old who has been diagnosed with Astrocystoma. She would truly like to go to Disneyworld. Please join us in Making A REEL Difference in her life by helping grant her wish.

PPSC Conference and Valentine's Day

We just got back from the Professional Photographers of South Carolina yearly conference. We had a ton of fun hanging out with fellow professional photographers from South Carolina and talking shop with them. The speakers at the conference were great and we came back with a multitude of new ideas with the creative juices flowing.

We want to wish everyone a happy Valentine's day! Enjoy this weekend and do something special with the one you love. Valentine's day always reminds me of elementary school with the cute little Valentine's cards that would be handed out to everyone in the class and all the good candy!!

Ross and Leslie's Wedding Video

South Carolina Wedding Videographers - Picasso Perfect Photography - have been working to develop a technique to do time lapse videos for weddings and events.

Here is the video from Ross and Leslie's wedding. The video was put into lower resolution so that it would more quickly load and there wouldn't be such a lag. It is a really quick look at their entire wedding day in Charleston, SC. We enjoyed putting this together and we look forward to being able to do this at some more weddings.

Picasso Perfect offers photography and video!

We met with lots of excited brides and even got to book an engagement session with the winner of "Bridal Idol", a hilarious contest put on by Bridal Blast to see who could finish 80's song lyrics karaoke style. Bridal shows are such a fun way to meet all your wedding vendors and great way to sit down and talk with your photographer. We get a chance to hear what brides are looking for, and brides get a chance to see our style and ask questions.

We managed to have a few moments where we could check out the latest bridals fashions walking down the runway and even witness the fast-paced "Bridal Musical Chairs", it was a lot of fun to watch and even more fun to talk with the brides and families afterwards.

We had great time meeting with our booth neighbor Anne Wright who runs "Photobox". You can check out their site at www.photoboxsc.com. We even got to hop in the booth and have a few "team" pictures taken.

Craig and Crystal Hewitt - Parker and Haley

Craig Hewitt is a fellow photographer right here in the Columbia area. His family was involved in a horrible accident this summer that claimed the lives of his children (Parker 5, and Haley 3) and put his wife in the hospital with a broken back. We have posted the story below if you are not familiar with it. Dave and Lauren-Ashleigh

We are happy to show off some of recent pictures from an engagement session that Picasso Perfect Photography did with Dave and Lauren-Ashleigh. This was a really special shoot for us because Dave is the Chaplin with the 82^nd Airborne Division of the Army and is currently stationed in Iraq. He came back to the U.S. for 2 weeks of R&R and during that time he asked Lauren-Ashleigh to marry him. We were so glad to be able to shoot their engagement photographs before Dave had to head back to Iraq. We were honored to be a part of such a sweet moment in the lives of this couple – the love that they share with one another is so evident! Dave, we appreciate your service and sacrifice for this country and we wish both of you the best of luck as you plan your upcoming nuptials.

These are the 3 versions of the logo you will see depending on the background and the type of media being used. The yellow is the universal logo for the company on all color displays.
